I am always willing to give a shout out to other travel bloggers when they have great packing posts. While we all should be traveling lightly, these posts are especially useful if you are coming up against airline imposed weight limits. Enjoy!
Brooke Schoenman from Her Packing List is my hero! She recently traveled for 3 weeks with a small tote that came in at 8.2 lbs (3.7 kg).
Eytan from Snarky Nomad shows us how to make itty bitty deodorant sticks from lip balm tubes. These are smaller and lighter than deodorant crystals! I recently tried this trick with my NARS multi-stick. Anything to save an ounce.
Sarah Murdoch from Adventures with Sarah has a great post on how we need to consider the weight of our clothing when we travel. I found this to be true on my own recent trip to South America.
Oh wow! Just followed your link to Sarah Murdoch’s. Have to say never really thought about it that way! Good list though:)
I really liked all of these but did I miss mention of what they do for rainy days? This is an ongoing dilemma for me as I live out of my suitcase (for the last 3.5 years). As much as I hate to do it – I’m now in South America and carrying both tiny portable umbrella and a fairly light Patagonia Jacket that takes up way too much room. However, acts as another warm layer in cold weather.
I know that Eytan carries a rain jacket.
I carry an REI Kyoto jacket that packs up fairly small. It worked well hiking over Salkantay pass in the Andes. It rained almost every day. The Marmot Precip is another light jacket. If you want to go ultra light and ultra compact I would recommend the Montbell Versalite series. Their rain pants are great and pack up insanely small.

My favorite packing tip is this: save up your tatty, ratty underwear–ones that you will throw out once dirty. I pack 7 pairs for 7 nights and once dirty–toss them. It frees up a bit of space for things I buy on the trip and I don’t have to wash undies and worry about them getting dry. If you’re going with a special someone, you might want to pack some nice ones, but we all have even sexy ones that have seen better days and won’t break our hearts to toss them. I even have bought cheap Walmart ones that cost less than a dollar and used as disposables, cheaper than the disposables in travel catalogs!
I disagree with this advice. I carry 3 ex-officio bikini briefs. One to wear, one to wash, and a spare. They are significantly lighter than your 7 ratty undies. They also dry quickly when washed. All 3 take up less space than my fist. The ex-officio briefs appear expensive. That said, they usually last for 10 years so the cost per wear is very low.
